Working with Sitemaps and Information Architecture

During the content phase of a project, TAMs play a key role in shaping the website’s structure and overall information architecture, either by refining an existing sitemap or helping partners create one from scratch. While your role might vary depending on the project and your expertise, the tools you use should remain flexible and adaptable to ensure that both the sitemap and the information architecture meet the partners’ needs.

To get started, use our sitemap template in Google Sheets:

Project size and complexity

Your involvement as a TAM will depend on your experience level, skill set, and the site’s complexity. For simpler projects, your role may focus on ensuring that the sitemap and the information architecture are aligned with the partners’ goals and that the website’s structure supports easy navigation.

For more complex projects with advanced user flows or imported content, you’ll need to collaborate closely with designers and developers to ensure both the sitemap and the underlying information architecture are scalable, intuitive, and user-friendly.

Feel free to engage designers early in the process to gather their input on the sitemap and user flows, ensuring smooth alignment throughout the project.
